Trip Report: Dick Tracy Rock 2023

On the first day of Dick Tracy Rock, there was a lot of rain and thunder, which caused us to not be able to canoe to the island(the first day is only allowed for those of a certain rank). However, we still set up camp near the dock, and when everyone finished setting up, the rain stopped. This let us go out on boats driven by other people who were kind enough to allow us to ride on them and give us an opportunity. With the boats, we could either go to Dick Tracy Rock and test gravity or ride around on the boats and do things such as tubing, wakeboarding, and skiing. Since the last Dick Tracy Rock Trip, the water level has increased, making the test of gravity closer to the water (the height got lowered). Also on the last night we do our customary PLC camfire with a lot of funny skits. While waiting for a boat, people could canoe at the dock or stay at base camp. The canoes were cleaned by putting them upside down on a rack, and we also made sure to leave no trace at base camp. 39 Scouts and a couple of parents were in attendance. The best part about this trip is the water sports and going on the boats. The troop had a lot of fun and we were able to connect with each other.

Trip Report: CDC Summer Camp 2023

Camp Davy Crockett Summer Camp is one of the best and biggest trips Boy Scouts has to offer. You get to do merit badges for a week while camping. You can also swim in the pool during your free time. COPE is one of the best activities there as you can zipline and do rock-climbing. It is hot and sunny as it is during Summer. We recently got a new dining hall. Most of the time you can enjoy the sunset and water with your friends or shoot guns at the wild frontier. We also have a skit competition and compete with other patrols. There’s also fun activities on camp such as the Polar Bear Swim and Up With The Sun Fun Run. You can either sleep in a cabin with others or pitch your own tent . 53 scouts went on this trip from our patrol alone. It also has “Eagle Bound” which is great for all, but mostly newer scouts as it does Tenderfoot, First Class, and Second Class requirements in the handbook. You can take up to 4 classes for a week long and you wake up at 6:30 and go to sleep at 11:00 with taps. Overall it’s a very fun event with a wide selection of merit badges.

Trip Report: Shooting Fair 2023

Shooting Fair is a fun trip hosted at Camp Davy Crockett. It is a day of learning how to shoot guns(such as a shotgun and rifle) and bows and having fun while doing so. Along with shooting guns you also have to learn gun safety. You as a scout need to ask for permission to enter the range. After the permission is granted you can shoot away at a paper target. There are also competitions to see who gets the most points. You do have to prepare as it might be cold and it is an all day trip. Overall people very much like it and 37 people went to it this year. People said it was fun and would recommend to others especially starting scouts. It is a great trip for learning the basics and firearm safety.

Trip Report: OMBO 2023

Operation Merit Badge Opportunity was hosted on the fourth of February at CHPC. This event focused on completing Merit Badges. It was only the 4 Citizenship merit badges. Specifically Citizenship in the community and Citizenship in Society(a new merit badge) were attended the most by scouts. The fun part about this event was making projects. The interesting part about this event was learning about different religious perspectives and texts. Overall it was a fun event to complete your Eagle required merit badges and everyone had a lot insights after it. It only costs two dollars which is a bargain for completing required merit badges. The event is nice because you end up completing the entire merit badge.

Trip Report: Sea Base 2023

Sea base is not for the faint of heart and is more recommended to older scouts. On this trip you go around the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Bay while passing islands such as Islamorado and Key Largo. This trip is enjoyed by many as you can fish, sail(learn how to) and also you get to spend time with friends. It is recommended for older scouts as it is mentally exhausting and along with that there is weight requirements for safety on the boat and passing a BSA swimming test. You also get to explore coral reefs and go snorkeling along with learning how to maintain and live in a boat. With that fun comes responsiblity as you are expected to do cooking, cleaning, and keeping anchor watch among many other tasks. It took place in late December- early January in 2023. So overall you have to do everything and maintain about along with sleeping on a boat, so this is not recommended for people who get easily seasick.

People enjoying the Sun at Sea Base from Dec 28-3.

Trip Report: National Jamboree 2023

Jamboree is the biggest event in all of scouting due to the fact that Boy Scouts all over the world meet there every four years. It is not for new scouts as it is very crowded and can be intimidating. There is many events during Jamboree including Apex and many music concerts. Apex is when you go out onto a field with other scout and get to do fun activities for many hours. There is good wifi down there, but there have been complaints about the app they have. Watersports, archery, rock climbing, and ziplining, biking, skateboarding and soo much more is also included in Jamboree. Overall, the event is exciting with many things to do for all kinds off people. Overall the biggest scouting event of the year and is very fun due to new experiences and meeting other scouts.

Trip Report: Philmont 2021

Philmont is the hardest backpacking trip available for troop 48. It’s an 11 day backpacking trip in New Mexico with over 65 backpacking miles with 100 miles in total. It’s only recommended for the best backpackers as the weather is unpredictable as it went from sun to hail to thunder in the span of one day. Also there is early wake-up calls, opening latrines, sunburns, along with a subpar environment. There was many fun things to do there though as scouts panned for gold, climbed telephone poles, painted cares, climbed to 12,400 feet, smelled and tasted trees along with a COPE course, blacksmithing, and rappelling among many other things scouts did for fun on this trip. This is also good for people who are into guns as you get to shoot shotguns, rifles, and pistols. Even though the conditions were bad the scouts still managed to have a lot of fun and bonding.

Trip Report: Cumberland Island 2022

Cumberland Island is a fun trip for all types of scouts, but is particularly catered for intermediate to older scouts. It consists of a 7 hour drive to a campsite in Georgia then a next day Ferry to Cumberland Island. You do have to hike a bit to the campsite, but other than that you barely have to walk. Cumberland Island is know for its moments of fishing, visiting Spanish ruins, watching manatees, and using bike transport throughout the island. You also get to see the beach while hanging out with friends. So its overall a good trip with tropical vibes to go around.

From May 28-4, 2022

Trip Report: Yorktown 2021

On the first day pf Yorktown, you have to drive through I-26 all the way to Charleston. You got to walk around town and the city as well as visiting a Ghost town. You also got to board aircraft Carrier Yorktown and other ships at Patriots Point in Charleston, eating and sleeping on board the Yorktown. Along with that there was also a museum with naval history regarding Yorktown. You also got to visit the beach along this trip as well as an optional boat ride to Fort Sumter.

Trip Report: NYLT 2022

National Youth Leadership Training or NYLT is a weeklong leadership course at Camp Davy Crockett during the summer. It focuses on core mechanics such as team building and leadership. They also taught scouts the 4 points of leadership which are: Storming, Forming, Performing, and Norming. Even though it was a bit stressful at times, it was filled with fun included the specialized team bonding activities. Also this trip would be recommended for mostly older scouts seeking a leadership position.
