2023 Summer Camp – Class Registration for Early Birds

Is there a merit badge class at camp that you really would like to take, but fills up quickly… like Cooking*, Fishing, or Welding?  Class registration for 2023 Summer Camp at Camp Davy Crockett is opening very early – now starting October 1, 2022.  Grab desirable classes by first checking the one-page worksheet and/or the class catalogue and then letting Mr. Hasler know by email or in writing (with your name!).  You’ll be informed when your schedule is entered.

Payment for Summer Camp (June 18-24, 2023) will be posted later once better information is available – likely after the Recharter effort is done.  One reported change is that there will not be class fees, but the base camp fee was increased to save time adjusting these for every scout participant.

2022 is Camp Davy Crockett’s 50th Anniversary!  Class schedule has been announced – and now open for registration.

Scouts can sign up for classes once the $26 youth deposit is paid to Mr. Browning.  Paper copies of the sign-up worksheet will be in the wire racks which need to be given to Mr. Hasler for your choices, including preferred time slot. Most classes have a hard maximum of 25 students with as few as six allowed for Archery. Some classes have minimum age limitation, while others have fees to cover the cost of supplies.  See the Class Catalog for details.

For new scouts (joining November 2021 or later) or those who need a boost, half-day Eagle Bound focuses on the skills needed for early ranks. Troop 48 also recommends Swimming merit badge as underpinning for all water activities. (Note to parents: Swimming also ensures your scout showers at least once a day.) From there, pick activities which sound interesting to you.

Full are:  9am Crockett’s Wild Frontier Marksmanship Program, Fishing, Robotics, Water Sports, and Welding. 10am Cooking, Emergency Prep, and Fly Fishing are Full.  11am Chess, Engineering, Mammal Study, and Motorboating are Full.  2pm Full are Archery, Rifle Shooting, Water Sports, and Welding.  4pm Water Sports. 5pm Snorkeling BSA.  Wait List option does allow you to sign up for/hold an alternative.  Check out this Class Attendees Report on Pages 4-6 for Week 2 to what is available.

Medicine MB to become Health Care Professions

Administration

As announced on the BSA blog, Medicine merit badge is being updated to become Health Care Professions merit badge at the end of 2021. New requirements are not yet published.

For those who have started on Medicine MB, you can continue to work on the requirements to complete it. The list has Jack, Sam, Grayson, Easton, Riley, Aiden M., Jonathan, Farris, and Christopher W. Primary need is to volunteer at a public health event.

Summer Camp Advancement Follow-up

Administration

Congratulations to the 60 scouts who enjoyed a week at Camp Davy Crockett for summer camp. You completed 103 merit badges plus two Snorkeling BSA and six Stand-up Paddleboarding BSA. At least two Scout ranks and two Tenderfoot ranks were earned. Three scouts and one parent completed BSA Lifeguard training (if their First Aid/CPR card is current). No report on the two attempting to swim a mile! Or Up with the Sun Fun Runs.

So what’s next? Hopefully you are settling back into home life and ready for an outdoors troop meeting on Tuesday at the fields next to Rock Springs Elementary.

For those who were in the Eagle Bound program or completed early rank requirements in camp, it is really important that you see Mr. Hasler for a check of your scout handbook to ensure our records are aligned. You might be much closer to finishing up the next rank than you think!

97 pages of Incomplete merit badge sheets have been created to guide you on who to work with as counselor(s) and what is left to learn and demonstrate. It is expected that you engage with these listed counselors (a few we have to determine who is appropriately certified) to finish up at your own pace. Some merit badges really have just a simple requirement to accomplish while others need more study or have a project to complete.

Please be aware that the August 3rd troop meeting will be the cutoff date for advancement to be recognized at the August 17th Court of Honor. Otherwise the following COH is in November.

Merit Badge Counselors for Troop 48

In order to qualify as a merit badge counselor, prospective volunteers must have the education and skills needed to provide instruction and to evaluate performance.  They must be at least 18 years old, able to set a positive example through both good character and rapport.

Officially, certifying merit badge counselor (abbreviated MBC in this post) is the responsibility of the Sequoyah Council with annual certification for Youth Protection Training and which merit badges.  A BSA Adult Leader Application with position code 42 is required for new merit badge counselors, which can be completed for free or added to a recent (in current calendar year) application for Assistant Scoutmaster role.  In addition, Form 34405 Merit Badge Counselor Information must be completed every calendar year (really wish Scouting BSA would align with two-year Youth Protection Training cycle).  The trio of forms electronically (including downloading a Youth Protection Training certificate) were created in about half hour.

While national BSA has online training for this role available in My.Scouting.org, it is not consistent on which courses are needed – and frankly are really dry to listen to, thus our preference is for Troop 48 MBCs (current and new) to review this presentation for The Merit Badge Program which is also available by national BSA.

If interested in being a Merit Badge Counselor for Troop 48, then please complete the information form for your top eight merit badges.  If you really want to be able to counsel more, then recommend printing the form to allow a second page, and then scan and send as a PDF. If you are counseling for district or council events, then provide the Adult Leader Application and Youth Protection Certificate to have the complete set of paperwork.

This information is to be routed through our troop’s Advancement Coordinator, Mr. Hasler.

Exploration, Fish and Wildlife Management, Genealogy, Insect Study, Inventing, Metalwork, Model Design, Motorboating, Moviemaking, Oceanography, Search and Rescue, Signs, Signals & Codes, Small Boat Sailing, Water Sports, and Wood Carving.

Adult Leadership Training: iOLS // NRA:RSO

Registration ends Friday 01-08-2021 11:59 PM.

The expected training for BSA Assistant Scoutmasters is Youth Protection, Scoutmaster Specific Training (either classroom or series of online classes), Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS), and Hazardous Weather.  Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is only one that has to be a hands-on experience to ensure the concepts are learned.

IOLS will be offered concurrently during the January 15-17 Winter Camp at Camp Davy Crockett.   It is the last requirement needed for being “Trained” by Browning, Howard, Reed, S. and J. White.  This course and Hazardous Weather are needed by Dunnivant, Peters, and Schaefer to complete their initial training.

In the Journey to Excellence metrics for troop performance, Silver level for Trained Leadership targets at least 60% of the assistants have completed the position-specific training.  Troop 48 just needed seven more adults to achieve this rating, which would also attain the Gold standard since our Troop Committee is trained and multiple adult leaders have taken the Wood Badge course.

Consider this opportunity in January (or in June at summer camp) to help maintain the high standards for working with Troop 48 scouts.

Signup for iOLS

Winter Camp will be hosting Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) training from 6:00pm Friday, January. 15 through 7:00pm Sunday, Jan 17, 2020 durring Winter Camp

Cost is $40 per participant.

This course builds and expands on the concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training and provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors.

Specifically, this hands-on program gives adult leaders a practical introduction to the patrol method of a boy-led troop by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in effective and engaging Scouting programs.

Who Should Take IOLS?

This course is part of the required training for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. In addition, Webelos leaders planning to cross over into Scouts BSA and troop committee members or other interested leaders are encouraged to attend.

What Is Included?

  • Meals (dinner Friday, breakfast and lunch Saturday)
  • Drinks and snacks.
  • Trained patch (for those who have completed Scoumaster leader-specific training)
  • Group gear (stoves, cookware, etc.)

What Do I Need to Bring?

  • BSA Annual Health and Medical Record (parts A and B only)
  • Boy Scout Handbook
  • Outdoor Essentials: Knife, first aid kit, rain gear, water bottle, flashlight/headlight, sun protection, compass
  • Clothing for the season
  • Backpack or duffel bag for your gear

Signup for: National Rifle Association Range Safety Officer Certification Course

The NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally recognized range safety officer certification. To become a NRA Range Safety Officer, you must pass the RSO course and demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

This course is for adults 21 and older.

This course runs from 9:00 AM – 8:30 PM (need to arrive by 8:15 AM for check-in)
