Meet the Senior Patrol Leader Candidates – May 2023

Langley Brents

Langley Brents (current SPL) has been a T48 member since 2019. He has gained lots of experience, through the Troop. He has been Senior Patrol leader, once, Assistant Senior Patrol leader once. He is currently serving as OA Chapter Chief, for the Bishwi Aney chapter, President of the Venturing Crew, and has been staff for multiple council-level events like NYLT. He hopes to achieve great things like achieving the OA national champion title for men’s northern traditional dancing. His goal for Senior Patrol Leader this round is to help unify and strengthen the Troop with all of its new members.

Nathan Browning

As Senior Patrol Leader, I would continue the strong past leadership of Easton, Squirrel, Timothy, and Langley. I would specifically emphasize particular qualities such as solid communications and maintaining a scout-led environment. I would keep a firm chain of command from patrol-level jobs to troop level positions to keep a strong leadership in the troop and emphasize the importance of different roles. Similarly, I would like to make sure accountability in leadership is held, from lower positions all the way to the top. I would take into account any inputs or recommendations, no matter where they come from. Finally, I seek the role of Senior Patrol Leadership to continue the strength, history, and effectiveness of Troop 48, to develop my own leadership skills and experience, and to help develop the leadership of other scouts.

Noah Malik

I seek the position of SPL because I want to serve Troop 48 more. If I were to be elected, I

would promote service and volunteer activities more. I hope to instill a greater sense of

responsibility and belonging in our community so that all Scouts actively participate in

volunteering opportunities even outside of Scouting.

Paul Taylor

I believe that I would be useful as your SPL for a few reasons. I have pretty good skills and experience in working with all sorts of different kinds of people. I also intend to take the best care of my people I possibly can as SPL, helping them achieve whatever it is they may wish to accomplish in scouting. On top of that, I already have the respect of a good majority of the troop, which will make these tasks even easier to accomplish. I will also be of good use in resolving situations between scouts as there is a lot of experience in that from ROTC that I have. I will do the absolute best I can to make these things happen.

Trip Report: 2022 CDC Summer Camp

Camp Davy Crockett Summer Camp is one of the best and biggest trips Boy Scouts has to offer. You get to do merit badges for a week while camping. You can also swim in the pool during your free time. COPE is one of the best activities there as you can zipline and do rockclimbing. It is hot and sunny as it is during Summer. We recently got a new dining hall. Most of the time you can enjoy the sunset and water with your friends or shoot guns at the wild frontier. We also have a skit competition and compete with other patrols. 53 scouts went on this trip.

Trip Report: 2022 Dick Tracy Rock

On the first day of Dick Tracy Rock, there was a lot of rain and thunder, which caused us to not be able to canoe to the island. However, we still set up camp near the dock, and when everyone finished setting up, the rain stopped. This let us go out on boats driven by other people who were kind enough to allow us to ride on them and give us an opportunity. With the boats, we could either go to Dick Tracy Rock and test gravity or ride around on the boats and do things such as tubing, wakeboarding, and skiing. Since the last Dick Tracy Rock Trip, the water level has increased, making the test of gravity closer to the water (the height got lowered). While waiting for a boat, people could canoe at the dock or stay at base camp. The canoes were cleaned by putting them upside down on a rack, and we also made sure to leave no trace at base camp. 39 Scouts and a couple of parents were in attendance. The best part about this trip is the water sports and going on the boats. The group had a lot of fun and we were able to connect with each other.

WE WILL NOT BE ATTENDING AS A TROOP-

However, if you are not planning on attending Backbone Rock let Julieann White know if you have availability to attend Webelos Woods

Backbone Rock is a truck-in ( with optional backing in ) to camp at Backbone Rock Campground AND VA Creeper Trail biking Sunday departing from Damascus, VA).

Most of Saturday and Sunday afternoons will be spent rappelling and maybe rock climbing. Beginners are welcome; we will have a “prep school” 10-ft high course plus the usual 40-ft descent and others depending upon our resources.

A nice stream and rapids beside the campground are added attractions for fishing. We will participate in games and enjoy camp stories, jokes, and songs.

Again If you can not attend Backbone Rock let Julieann White know if you have an interest in going to CDC for Webelos Woods-
