Dick Tracy Rock, Friday, Aug 9 at 4:00 PM – Sunday, Aug 11 at 5:00 PM

We are offering a Friday night experience to older youth (age 14 by September 1st and First Class rank). All others are welcome to join on Saturday (8:00 AM CHPC) for what would be a standard DTR weekend. THIS IS NOT A TRUCK IN EVENT. DO NOT TAKE PATROL BOXES, LARGE STOVES, ETC.  Trip Sheet  Packing List

Grayson Highlands Backpack/Truck-In, Saturday, Aug 24 7 AM – Sunday, Aug 25 3 PM 

*Space is limited to 30 truck-in campers and 16 backpackers (looking for 7 to 8 drivers)

Trip consists of 2 parts: 

(A) 9-mile Backpacking Trip from Visitor Center parking lot at Massie Gap to “Scales” area via part of the Appalachian Trail and Wilson Creek Trail. Camping will be west of Third Peak. Trails are rated “moderate difficulty.”

(B) Truck-in Camping in the Hickory Ridge Campground, check-in at 4:00 PM. Sites 15, 16, 17, 18, and 20 are available with 2 vehicles per site and 6 persons per site. Day hikes and blueberry

picking are special activities available. Will hold a campfire, so bring stories, jokes, and songs to share. Church services are planned for Sunday. Vehicle shuttles will be used between the campground and Massie Gap.  Booking and Trip Sheet

Surgoinsville Labor Day Flag Retirement, Saturday Aug 31 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm   

Come participate in a Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Surgoinsville Riverfront Festival. Enjoy live music, games, inflatables, and meet veterans helping retire the flags.

August 25 for our Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Event! 10am.  Help those in need. Our challenge is to pack 16,750 meals in two hours.

Silent Auction at the Bash was fun and a great success. The cooler raffle was drawn on Tuesday.   Congratulations to Christine Browning (and Jerry/Nathan).

Thank you to all who attended the Bash. 

It was a great success with lots of fun!!

Fun Fest Parade (Friday, July 19, meet at 6pm) 

Lineup enters at the intersection of Clay and Market Streets.  Parade runs along Center and Sullivan Streets.  Pack/Troop will line up well in advance so actual location of meetup will be communicated that afternoon.  Facebook or call Alex Johnston  (423) 366-9900  

Crazy 8 Race (Saturday, July 20)

Julie Keeton (423) 914-4581 will start putting together medals with her team at 1:00pm until 3:00-4:00pm. Time is approximate due to how long it takes to assemble. No scouts should be left without a parent to pick them up after completion. This team is not handing out the medals. 

Beth Dunnivant (423) 360-8249 will be the adult leadership for handing out the medals. 

Medals hand-out team needs to arrive at 4:00pm. We can definitely help with water and anything the field staff asks. (We have even made announcements in the past.) 

Patrick Monk (423) 967-9704 will be setting up the Barking Lot at 4:00pm, which is located just before entrance to the stadium where there will be a banner and We Run Events Tent. 

Everyone please be in the stadium at 4:00pm to help with the Little 8 race. Mostly organizing and helping with the kids. We need at least 10 volunteers but better with as many as can be there. We will then split into groups to help with handing out award medals and working the barking lot. 

The Almost Crazy 3K Run/Walk starts at 7:58pm, and the Crazy 8s 8K Run starts at 8:58pm. The Barking Lot should be set up and ready to go by 7:30pm.  We are expecting about 500 in the 3K and at least 2500 in the 8K.  Culligan will provide water and cups and coolers to pour the water. We will bring the table. Bring a dog dish and water bowl.

We have your t-shirts ready for your arrival. This event will occur regardless of weather!

Virgin Falls Intermediate Backpacking (Friday-Sunday, July 26-28)

Summer camp incomplete Merit Badge information is available. 

See Mrs. Tanner for Incomplete MB sheets.  Several can readily be finished before the July 30 cutoff for the Eagle Court of Honor.  For those who took Eagle Bound, book checks are needed to update your handbooks with the skills you learned and demonstrated.  Some have already started BUT we still have many that have not.

Pork Butt Fundraiser 
Volunteers Needed to help prepare the Pork on Friday, July 5th. Meet at Randy English’s Cabinet Shop (5236 Memorial Blvd, Kingsport) at 5:00 PM. Please help Saturday July 6th at 8:00 AM to help wrap the meat, add brown sugar and butter, and return to the smoker. Butts can be picked up English’s Cabinet Shop from 12:00 noon to 1:00 PM.

Please arrive to pick up the meat on Saturday July 6th at noon at English’s Cabinet Shop. Call Julieann or Jerry to make other arrangements.

Goodwill opportunity

We are hosting Troop 1 (a girl troop from Mississippi) on Saturday, July, 6th  here at CHPC.  7 adults (4 female and 3 male) plus 9 female scouts. Troop 48 has volunteers providing the food. We invite our scouts to come and greet the Troop!!

Select your opportunity – you help two different projects with different skill ranges.  Both will have a cooler with water and lunch. Good opportunities to earn service hours.

If fishing, a VA license is required for those over 16 yrs (Online: www.gooutdoorsvirginia.com or by Phone (804) 367-1000 during regular business hours). Lake rental equipment includes canoes, kayaks, fishing kayaks, paddleboards, paddle boats and hydrobikes. Note: All food/beverages must be stored in an approved bear-proof container, your locked vehicle or hard-sided camper at all times unless being eaten, prepared, or transported. Plan your menus accordingly.

Sullivan Heights Middle School Ballfield Night (June 25)

When we return from camp, Troop 48 will have the traditional kickball night at the Sullivan Heights Middle School (former South HS) front ballfield.  Park in the lots or in front of the building but not along the main entrance road.  Forecast is for HOT, so bring your own (and labeled) water bottle. Each patrol will have an attendance sheet to fill out (so wear Class B uniform).  Rain plans are a regular troop meeting at CHPC. 

Patrol Duty!!! If at the ballfield, then duties are skipped for the evening.

Pork Butt Fundraiser happening now:

Please talk to family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, etc. and order Pork Butts for the fundraiser. Order more than one and freeze it for future BBQ feasts. Butts to be available by Saturday morning, July 6th. Get order forms from the event calendar for the trip.

Orders and money must be turned in to Mr. Browning by Monday, July 1st.

Congratulations to Noah Malik  He is Troop 48’s newest Eagle Scout, #183. We are so proud of this young man for all his accomplishments!!! Well done, Noah!!

Summer Camp (June 16-22) Assemble @ CHPC: 10:30 AM June 16, 2024 Sunday. 

Please help!!! We need snack donations for the week of camp !!!!

We would like to put out healthy snacks throughout the day.  Our busy scouts need a little bit more than camp dining. 

We still have a few that need a physical form, including Part C! Bring them Sunday (letting Mr. Browning or Mrs. White know of this choice) or Email them ahead of time.   

Express Care 444 on Clinchfield Street Suite 202 has $30 walk-in sports physical.

  • Game Guides:  Phoenix (pick something besides basketball)
  • PLC Host (done) and troop meeting set-up (each week):  Panther 
  • Service:  Fox (Clean up meeting and leadership assistance) 
  • Can Recycling:  Flaming Arrow 
  • Grounds:  Wolf (Former West Bank which Venturing Crew is handling. Duties are now on Tuesday nights please rake the playground mulch, put rocks back in garden beds that are in the parking lot, empty trash by the play yard and pick up litter around church grounds.) 

Tuesday troop meeting planning for June

18  For scouts not at camp, Mr. Overton, Mr. Hasler, and Mrs. Tanner will be at CHPC to focus on 1:1 advancement in a quieter setting.  Meet in front of/inside Jones Bldg.

25  Sullivan Heights Middle School Ballfield Night (June 25)

When we return from camp, Troop 48 will have the traditional kickball night at the Sullivan Heights Middle School (former South HS) front ballfield.  Park in the lots or in front of the building but not along the main entrance road.  Rain plans are a regular troop meeting at CHPC. 

Goodwill opportunity:

We are hosting Troop 1 (a girl troop from Mississippi) on Saturday, June 29, and Saturday, July 7, one night in each direction here at CHPC.  7 adults (4 female and 3 male) plus 9 female scouts. Troop 48 will provide breakfast and some treats. Please help with food donations.

Hungry Mother SP swimming adventure (12-14 July)

T48.org registration is now open. Truck-in camping in group site for up to 20 members, no vehicles (park in nearby lot) and/or individual campsites for up to 6 members and 2 vehicles. If fishing, a VA license is required for those over 16 yrs (Online: www.gooutdoorsvirginia.com or by Phone (804) 367-1000 during regular business hours). Lake rental equipment includes canoes, kayaks, fishing kayaks, paddleboards, paddleboats and hydrobikes. Note: All food/beverages must be stored in an approved bear-proof container, your locked vehicle or hard-sided camper at all times unless being eaten, prepared, or transported. Plan your menus accordingly.

Sign Up:Crazy 8 Race (July 20) 

We Run Events will once again be host to the USA 8K National Championship.

The USA Track & Field sanctions a circuit of national championships for different road race distances across the country.  The top USA runners travel to these premier events with the hopes of being named the national champion at that distance.  The Crazy 8s 8K has been approved by USA Track & Field to host the 8K championships for 2022 – 2025 and will be added to the USATF Running Circuit.
