Meeting focus:  Cumberland Gap prep / Scout rank for new members

Get registered for Cumberland Gap Truck-in and Backpacking (May 4-5)

Great trip for truck-in campers as well as serious backpackers. Campers will stay in the Wilderness Trail Campground and enjoy relaxed camping, hiking trails, the overlook, and the visitor center with interpretive Wilderness Road museum. Backpackers will hike the challenging trail to Sand Cave. Please see the trip sheet for details and T48.org sign up soon. Everyone will have a great time!!

Patrol/Troop Elections – Change to Class B uniform  (May 7)

Time to determine leadership roles within the patrols plus Senior Patrol Leader.  Every patrol binder should have a copy of the patrol and troop job descriptions, so please review as a group before this date.  It is also when uniform expectations change from formal to casual, thus until November any scouting or troop themed shirt with official green scout pants and socks. 

Backpacking Introduction at Bays Mountain Park (May 18-19)

Introduction to backpacking by trekking to the primitive campground past Feagans Gap in Bays Mountain Park for an overnighter. Good for new scouts as it starts with pack inspection at CHPC to ensure the right gear is present.  Good for those who need backpacking cooking for the merit badge if they step forward to take lead on meal planning. Sign up on T48.org and pay $5 camping fee (scouts and adults) to troop treasurer.

Summer Camp (June 16-22) 

Full payment is due now to Mr. Browning as the troop is making final payment to council. Flaming Arrow was first to have all attending registered in T48.org and fully paid to win the Patrol Summer Camp Challenge.  Second place was Leadership Corps. Third, Shark.

An excellent sightseeing tour of NYC is planned including Central Park, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Broadway, Times Square and many other sights in the “Big Apple”. Visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral and watch ice skating and see the huge Christmas tree at Rockefeller Plaza! Ride to the Top of One World Trade Center! Take a boat tour on the Hudson River near Liberty Island to see The Statue of Liberty as well as Ellis Island!  Tour includes reserved seat tickets to Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular featuring the world famous Rockettes! Accommodations are located in the heart of the Theater District in Manhattan. What a way to start the Christmas Season!

  1. Friday, April 19. 3-6PM Pollinator garden work at Jefferson. (no flier- JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY)Note ! If Friday at Jefferson get rained out they may do Saturday am. Mrs Wilkins will let T48 know. 
  2. Saturday, April 20. 9-11AM Keep Kingsport Beautiful Clean up meet at the Splash Pad.
  3. Monday, April 22. 3:15-4:15PM DB Environmental Club campus Clean up- DBHS stem lobby.
  4. Monday, April 22. 6-7PM Pedal and Plant:  bike and plant on the greenbelt (have an adult and a helmet). Meet at Industry Drive trailhead.
  5. Saturday and Sunday, April 27&28. lots of times, lots of jobs Exchange Place Kingsport garden Fair. contact Sue Cadwallader at  epfestivals.gf@gmail.com.

Citizenship in the World for current and people who are working on it at coming up at camp-

Merit Badge University just for Troop 48.  Register your top two picks for classes on T48.org (choices filled by order of submission) from Citizenship in Society (reserved for upper ranks/ older scouts), Game Design, Personal Management, Sustainability, or service option for Citizenship in the Community at Hope Haven morning and then Petworks afternoon.

Obed Truck in Camping, Hiking (Friday to Sunday, April 5 – 7) up dated information was sent to everyone registered

Registration on T48.org Trip sheet and information on the Junior Ranger program. You can earn a patch. This trip replaces our traditional Back Bone Rock trip due to park closure. Rappelling, bouldering, hiking, fishing, and truck-in camping, all available.Monday 4/8/24  Total Eclipse!!!

Troop 48 Announcements – March 26, 2024 

Patrol outing

This Weekend:

Feed The Fire event. It is the 10th anniversary, which serves in honor of Weston Keeton who passed away following a heart and lung transplant. The family organizes this event each year for fire departments all over the world.  Please help by donating treats and drinks to local firefighters. 

Eagle Patrol is heading up Troop 48’s planning ans is meeting on Saturday, March 23rd at 10am for Feed the Fire in the CHPC parking lot. We will be delivering food to the two Fire Depts in Colonial Heights. If you want to help you can donate food, snacks, drinks, etc. They can be store bought or homemade. If you are unable to attend but want to donate items you can drop them off that morning at 9:45am at CHPC or contact Amy Taylor at 423-863-4943 if you need to meet at another time.

Outdoor Code – Every scout and adult leader should learn the below words since used in some of the opening ceremonies for troop meetings:

Backpacking talk by Mr. Shone was interrupted by the fire alarm so that will be continued 3/26. Also distribution of Incomplete MB sheets from MBU and mandatory book check. Deadline for recognitions at April 9 Court of Honor (including Eagle biographies).

This is mandatory leadership training for all new leadership representatives. Even if you have held a position in the past, please attend this event. If you hope to be in a leadership position in the future, also please attend. 8:00 am CHPC

Scout cards: Scouts earn 75% commission  Money turn-in deadline is currently April 1.

Scouts only have to sell just under 50 cards to pay for summer camp!

Outdoor Code – Every scout and adult leader should learn the below words since used in some of the opening ceremonies for troop meetings:

Obed Truck in Camping, Hiking (Friday to Sunday, April 5 – 7) 

Registration on T48.org is Open. Trip sheet and information on the Junior Ranger program. You can earn a patch. This trip replaces our traditional Back Bone Rock trip due to park closure. Rappelling, bouldering, hiking, fishing, and truck-in camping, all available.

OMBO – Operation Merit Badge Opportunity (Saturday, April 13)

This event is a Merit Badge University just for Troop 48.  Register your top two picks for classes on T48.org from Automotive Maintenance, Citizenship in Society (reserved for upper ranks/older scouts), Game Design, Personal Management, or a community service option for Citizenship in the Community at Hope Haven morning and then Petworks afternoon.  Class sizes are limited to 12 each, so get your T48.org choices submitted early.  $2/person fee for using the church

Summer Camp (June 16-22) 

Full payment is due to Mr. Browning by April 1. Patrol Competition – be the first to have all attending registered in T48 and fully paid to win the Patrol Summer Camp Challenge.

Register on T48.org to indicate preference for cabin, camp tent, hammock, or personal tent.

Mr. Hasler needs to know if you’re interested in going to summer camp to request more spaces to register for classes.  New scouts can register for classes before their youth application is processed.  Recommend Eagle Bound for early outdoor skills, Learn to Swim or Swimming merit badge, and an elective merit badge.

Hiking merit badge

Mr. Shone is leading this Eagle-required merit badge, which is an alternative to Swimming or Cycling. Three 10-mile and one 20-mile hikes remain to be planned and enjoyed.  Second adult leader is needed for each hike.

NEW YORK RADIO CITY CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR

December 27 – 30, 2024

See New York City decorated for Christmas!! An excellent sightseeing tour of NYC is planned including Central Park, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Broadway, Times Square and many other sights in the “Big Apple”. Visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral and watch ice skating and see the huge Christmas tree at Rockefeller Plaza! Ride to the Top of One World Trade Center! Take a boat tour on the Hudson River near Liberty Island to see The Statue of Liberty as well as Ellis Island!  Tour includes reserved seat tickets to Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular featuring the world famous Rockettes! Accommodations are located in the heart of the Theater District in Manhattan. What a way to start the Christmas Season!

Wilderness Road District Camporee (Saturday, March 23) GET REGISTERED 

Registration is open at Sequoyah Council here. Cost is $20, A fundraiser at this event will help the OA NOAC trip in July. Please plan to attend this high energy, fun activity. Hawaiian Theme – wear your best Hawaiian Shirt. Hawaiian themed dinner. Music, Games, Stem, Shooting, Frontier Camp. Camping available Friday and Saturday night with your own coordination.

Order of the Arrow (OA) elections for 2024 were held at the March 4th troop meeting.  The OA is the honor society of the Boy Scouts of America, composed of Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives as elected by their peers. Youth must be under the age of 21, hold First Class rank or higher, have 15 nights of Scouting BSA camping within the past two years, and have approval by the Scoutmaster, be on the ballot.

Merit Badge University (Saturday, March 2 at Northeast State)Troop 48 will meet in the parking lot @7:45 and Julie Keeton and the leadership corps will take attendance, they will tend to registeation and then hand out packets. The Troop will then assemble together for opening ceremonies.

OA Help Needed – Help is needed for a Pack 250 Crossover on March,11 at 7:00 PM. Help is also needed for the Troop 250 OA Election on March 11 at 7:00 PM. Please contact Nathan to let him know if you can help and get directions. Please wear Class A with the OA sash.
