Commemorative Air Force Tour: Tri-Cities Visit
The is a special opportunity which Colonel Conley wanted all of Troop 48 to know about.
By: By MIKE STILL mstill@timesnews.net
BLOUNTVILLE — The Commemorative Air Force returns to Tri-Cities Airport May 25-30 with a cross section of WWII military aircraft from flight trainers to planes made famous by the air war over Europe and Japan.
A frequent visitor to the airport, the CAF brings its 2021 Air Power History Tour with four performers: The B-29 Superfortress “FIFI”; P-51D Mustang “Gunfighter”; T-6 Texan advanced trainer; and PT-13 Kaydet primary trainer.
“The Commemorative Air Force is always overwhelmed by the support from the community when they come to Tri-Cities,” said Tri-Cities Aviation owner Pam Phillips. “Part of that is probably because of the large number of veterans in our area.”
“It’s always great to have the CAF at Tri-Cities,” said Airport Marketing Director Kristi Haulsee. “They enjoy coming here and there’s always a large crowd to welcome them.”
“FIFI,” one of only two airworthy B-29s in the world out of almost 4,000 built, was rescued in 1971 from a fate as a gunnery target and restored to airworthy condition after several years. She is also a movie star, representing the carrier of Chuck Yeager’s X-1 Mach 1-breaking aircraft in “The Right Stuff.”
“Gunfighter” is painted in the colors of the 55th Fighter Group, one of several units escorting Eighth Air Force bombers over Germany in WWII.
The PT-13 and T-6 were two of the training aircraft that thousands of wartime Army Air Force, Navy and Marine pilots had to master before earning their wings.
“FIFI,” the T-6 and PT-13 will arrive Tuesday, May 25, Phillips said, with displays running from 1-5 p.m. “Gunfighter will arrive at Tri-Cities on Friday, May 28.
On May 26-29, the display area will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. On May 30, the display area will be open from 9 a.m.–noon.

Adult Leadership Training: iOLS // NRA:RSO
Registration ends Friday 01-08-2021 11:59 PM.
The expected training for BSA Assistant Scoutmasters is Youth Protection, Scoutmaster Specific Training (either classroom or series of online classes), Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS), and Hazardous Weather. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is only one that has to be a hands-on experience to ensure the concepts are learned.
IOLS will be offered concurrently during the January 15-17 Winter Camp at Camp Davy Crockett. It is the last requirement needed for being “Trained” by Browning, Howard, Reed, S. and J. White. This course and Hazardous Weather are needed by Dunnivant, Peters, and Schaefer to complete their initial training.
In the Journey to Excellence metrics for troop performance, Silver level for Trained Leadership targets at least 60% of the assistants have completed the position-specific training. Troop 48 just needed seven more adults to achieve this rating, which would also attain the Gold standard since our Troop Committee is trained and multiple adult leaders have taken the Wood Badge course.
Consider this opportunity in January (or in June at summer camp) to help maintain the high standards for working with Troop 48 scouts.
Signup for iOLS
Winter Camp will be hosting Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) training from 6:00pm Friday, January. 15 through 7:00pm Sunday, Jan 17, 2020 durring Winter Camp

In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in effective and engaging Scouting programs.

The Orion Project at the Summit Bechtel Reserve
https://www.summitbsa.org/orionproject/
Troop 48 Avery Padgett is going. He would LOVE to go with some scout from Troop 48. In order to experience this adventure together signing up in a similar timeframe may be necessary.
NOTE: Whenever possible, provisional youth will be placed into a unit/contingent from their region.
Details of the adventure would need to be addressed amongst the family(s) involved.
The Summit Bechtel Reserve is throwing open its gates to any Scouts who want to experience everything the Summit has to offer from July 18 to 31. We have combined all our best programs into one adventure called the Orion Project for the 2021 season only.
The Orion Project is a seven-day overnight program that will give Scouts free reign of the Summit. The name of the game is adventure, and with so many great opportunities for BMX, skateboarding, mountain biking, zip lines, canopy tours, challenge courses, climbing, shooting sports, whitewater rafting, and fellowship with Scouts from across the nation, there’s lots to experience and choose from. Open to all members of Scouts BSA, Venturing and Exploring.
The Summit Staff knows that many plans have changed recently and we’re excited to offer this program to help you get out and enjoy the great outdoors. We are confident that our excellent staff and world class facilities will ensure that all our participants have a once-in-a-lifetime experience during their stay at the Summit.
BONUS: Want to leave your mark in a big way? One aspect of the program will be to give participants the opportunity to take part in focus groups that will directly impact the next BSA National Jamboree! Participants will get to give their opinions and help define the future of the BSA National Jamboree.
