Event planning

  • August 6: Cherokee Lake Canoe (Dick Tracy Rock) We are offering a Friday night experience to older youth (age 14 by September 1st and 1st class). All others are welcome to join in on Saturday for what would be a standard DTR weekend.
    • Patrols: Plan your menu and pay your food buyer. Pick canoe and tent partner.
    • Gear Check Out: Plan to check out back packing tents and tarps from the troop QM.
  • August 8: 6:30 – 8:30 PM CHPC Pool Party @ the Kingsport Aquatic Center
  • August 17: Eagle COH: Make plans to attend
  • August 28: Grayson Highlands Double Header (Backpack // Truck-In): 2 different opportunities to experience a beautiful area.
  • September 4: The Channels of Virginia Day Hike: A simple day hike to an incredible rock formation.
  • September 17: Creeper Trail (Bike Ride): The order for the day will be bike riding down the Creeper Trail on a lovely autumn Saturday afternoon.

Summer vacation is almost over. Have you see seen all of your scout friends recently? Patrol leaders and assistants make time to reach out to your missing members tonight (call them). Scouts are friendly so the call will be easy. Invite them to return and tell them of our upcoming events. Fill out the communication form and return it to Mr. Gould.

Event planning

At 8 PM on 7/27 in the gym Melinda Cannon will hold a 20-minute class covering Second Class Requirement #9a. “discuss with a selected individual approved by your leader the constitutional rights and obligations of a U.S. citizen.”

At 8 PM on a future date in the gym Mr. John White will hold a 30-minute class covering Second Class Requirement #7c. This should be a WELL ATTENDED class as there are over 30 youth still needing this.

Troop 48 BSA Patrol Checklist

Meeting Date: July 20th

Our Covid protocol has changed, please review Troop 48’s new plan with Rev. J David. Our agreement with the church to stay within designated areas not used by day school continues. We are to wear a mask when in larger groups (more than 25) in smaller areas (like the Jones Building.) We may now have Scoutmaster Conferences and Boards of Review in the Jones Building.  We do not have to wear a mask if vaccinated in patrol rooms; however, if more than 25 then all people wear masks with new CDC guidance. We ask that you respect the numbers we have when we come together. Covid screening is discontinued; however, if you are not feeling well to not attend scouting activities.

Approximately 1 hour from Kingsport to Kyle’s Ford (where the put-in is) Whe: meet at the put-in, the TWRA ramp, across the road from the River Place on the Clinch (2788 Hwy 70 Kyle’s Ford, TN 37765. Take out: Dorthey’s Barn (3652 Horton Ford Rd. Eidson TN 37731)

20210806 Cherokee Lake Canoe (Dick Tracy Rock) (Trip Sheet)

We are offering a Friday night experience to older youth (age 14 by September 1st and 1st class).

All others are welcome to join in on Saturday for what would be a standard DTR weekend.

Trip consists of backpack-style tent camping on an island (sometimes) in Cherokee Lake, about 3 miles from Camp Davy Crockett.

Philmont crew !!! Finally after the long wait of covid cancellations 11 Troop 48 scouts amd leaders will be departing for a Philmont adventure. Philmont Scout Ranch is a ranch located in Colfax County, New Mexico, near the village of Cimarron; it covers 140,177 acres of wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of the Rocky Mountains. 717-R-03 crew T48 will leave July 15 and return July 30 your scoutmaster and SPL will be attending this expedition.  However arranged leadership coverage in their absence.

We will have a council guest visit our Troop meeting our new council representative :

Mr. Daniel Kilby joinied our staff on June 1st.  He is our direct Scouting operations in the Wilderness Road district.

Daniel is a graduate from Pittsburg State University with a degree in Communications with a minor in Business Administration. He served three summers as a member of the Quivira Scout Ranch staff as the First Year Program Director. Daniel is an Eagle Scout and Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. He recently completed the practical portions of Wood Badge training and is working to complete his ticket.

Daniel and his wife are proud parents and active in their church.

Please join us in welcoming Daniel and his family to the finest council in America!

June 1 mark your calendar all Troop 48 first year summer camp attendees We will be having an official presentation of practical preparation for all new campers( patrol leadership please help your new scouts to be prepared for summer camp by encouraging attendance at this meeting and by answering questions along the way.

Protocol has not changed : A reminder was sent out that addressed the importance of safety regarding Church protocol for covid, addressing our agreement with the church to stay within designated areas and to wear a mask even with new mandate we ask that you respect the numbers we have when we come together and continue to wear a mask Patrols are welcome to move meetings outdoors.

Important planning:

• Emerald mine trip due to covid protocol in Virginia has been postponed and rescheduled for June 4-6 camping on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Hiking and working on merit badges will all be available please mark your calendar accordingly for changes. Visiting T48.org regularly for up to date information.

Provide oversite to follow standing COVID protocols, facilitate LNT operations.Participate with Leadership Corps in leading optional Scoutcraft Skills Sessions: counsel/demonstrate/approve skills and advancement requirements for camping, cooking, first aid, knot tying, orienteering, hiking, nature, Totin’ Chip, etc.

 The trip will consist of late afternoon departure from CHPC. Expect to arrive @ Julian Price Campground around 6:30 PM. We will look to set up camps and then eat a sack dinner. Set up for a PLC / unstructured campfire.

Saturday will be a FULL DAY. Early rise @ 6:00 AM followed by patrol grab and go breakfast. The group should be on the trail by 7:00 AM and finished before 10:00 AM. We will leave for Doc Rocks 10:15 and eat our durable sack lunch before MB class starts @ 11:00. With 2 MB classes (Geology and Mining in Society) the class will take 4 hours. Adults and Scouts will tour the museum and execute gem/ore mining at the level they have purchased to participate. Following the class, we will depart for The Blowing Rock and leverage a short (~.5 mile) hike to get group photos at the scenic offerings and view the conservatory. There will be full Troop 48 style campfire following dinner (patrols plan accordingly).

Sunday there will be a Troop 48 church service and unscheduled free time before lunch. Our departure to Linville Falls will follow, consisting of a nice tour and our arrival @ CHPC around 6:30 PM.
